Three years ago I bought the Mohawk "Match All Stain and Grain System".
This kit has pigments in liquid form that you blend together using a tinting
guide. All you do is match the color on the tinting guide to the color you
want and then follow a color "recipe", i.e. take 2 parts of color # 1 and
blend it with one part of color #3 and one part of color #5. I found the
system too difficult to use (not the product's fault, most likely my lack of
skill) and I put the Match All system on the shelf and went back to using
my earth tone and primary color pigment powders and graining liquid.
Recently I pulled the Match All system off the shelf and looked at the
tinting guide with it's recipes for color. All the colors in the Match All
system (save one) are earth tones and primary colors. I figured out the
name for each color in the system and then labeled all the color chip
recipes in the tinting guide. Now I have a "recipe book" that gives me a
starting point for mixing color.
I have found this tinting guide extremely useful as I do color matching.
The recipes are helping me "see" color better and I am finding color
matches quicker than my old trial and error method. If you are having
trouble finding color, try using a Mohawk Match All Tinting Guide,
SKU M900-4600. It is about $35.00.
(These kits show up on eBay from time to time CHEAP.)
If you want to use the Match All Tinting Guide to help you find color,
here is my color translation list:
1- White
2- Yellow Ochre
3- Raw Sienna
4- Burnt Sienna
5- Cordovan
6- Burnt Umber
7- Raw Umber
8- Black
9- Canary Yellow
10- Blue
