Groop,
A music professor contacted me recently about
repairing the travel cases for his four tympani drums.
The cases were made in 1975 by Ludwig in Chicago.
The cases were stored in an area where the tops were
exposed to heat and the laminate sheets on the top
have cracked and come loose from the wooden
substrate. The professor would like to have the
laminate replaced, understanding that applying the
laminate will be a patching job to a certain extent as I
can't disassemble the cases. (The wooden sides are
riveted to the metal frame.) He contacted Ludwig and
they aren't that interested in doing the repair.
My question is, where does one find the laminate that
covers the case? It is thinner than countertop laminate
and when you cut through it in an angle you can see it
is made up of a paper composite. The surface is very
slick, almost like melamine.
