Here is my 1st job in L.A. Guys I have some questions.
1. Anybody seen one of these chairs before ?
2. I`m thinking revival Gothic ? High back has a sort of William
& Mary look ?
3. Chair has all mortise and tenon joints.
4. Carvings appear hand cut or there has been wear over time ?
5. Wood pegs into joints (John Polgar mentioned this recently in
another thread.) As I looked at them it dawned on me that the
only way you could determine if a wood peg was hand drawn would
be to remove it ? I`m not doing that, just thinking.
6. What`s with the notched slot on stretchers. See photo.
7. How old is this chair and any other info
8. What materials would you use to color and topcoat ?
9. Should I bleach this chair ? Wood appears to be oak.
Removed several screws and compared to historical screw
patterns. It matched up w/ a 1850`s screw pattern (see photo).
After 1860 the thread core is tapered into the shank. So I`m
pretty sure this dating is accurate. Hard to see in jpeg but
screw matches 1850 pattern.
Looking at the wood peggs, all of them taper to a small diameter
on opposite side of die blocks. A small dimple or a slightly
proud pointed peg exiting on other side.
Thank you in advance.
