English in origin I think.  Small handle, brass ferrule
with two screws to tighten the blade.  The handle has a slot to
receive the blade which goes all the way through the handle
allowing you to have as much or as little blade exposed for cutting
as you want.  The handle is much like the handles on the old
dovetail saws that were referred to as Gentleman's saws.  Blades
are thick and can be had in a couple of configurations for cutting
but I have heard that a thin blade is available as well.
