The issue is a puncture wound in an1854 Celestial globe. A
fragment of the surface is visible in the hole. The paper
conservator we called in for a consult asked if we had a micro-
vac to pull it gently back in place - or completely out, which
ever came first. The photos are of Craig using what started with
a Zap glue micro tip, added to a turkey baster, duct taped to the
shop vac stepped adapter, finally attached to the Dirt Devil. A
test proved we could pick up a post-it note. Efforts to extract
the sunken part were not successful, not because of the suction
contraption, but the gesso ground was wedged like a rock
inside.
Nevertheless, it was fun. And we're walking away from any
more attempts to work on that part of the globe. It's only in for
a quick color adjustment on the stand before it heads to auction.
