Groop:

Well, I finally got to take the tambour out of the old organ to repair.
As you can see in the pictures it hasn't been fixed too well in the
past. I believe the material looks to me to be thin blue denim, and
after closeinspection it doesn't look like it was applied with hide glue.

As per DonW. advise I am going to mixup a batch of hide glue and
add some glycerin. I found 12 gage canvas at an art supply store
and have got enough to cover the entire tambour.

The questions I have are as follows.

1. It is very oil soaked in places and I'm affraid of adhesion
problems. It seems to be soaked into the tambour wood.

How do I clean it off so that hide glue will stick?

2. I assume that the viscosity of the hide glue
should remain like molasses for this application.

Is that so?

3. I was told by the art shop owner that I can put the hideglue right over
the top of the worn fabric and apply the new fabric to the top of that.
I don't know about that? The old fabric seems to be sticking pretty good
no loose spots. Should I do that or remove the old and apply new?

What if the old fabric was glued on with yellow glue or contact cement
of some kind. Will the hide glue stick to it?

Thanks for your advise
