Groop,

This tilt top table is in my shop for refinishing. It is made of mahogany
and the top has a beautiful swirl pattern that is highly reflective.
As you can see the top has been badly burned. The husband thought it made
a good soldering iron resting place. My dilemma is how to best restore the
top? From past experience a touch up on the surface of a reflective top will
never work. It always looks good from one angle but not from another. I
thought about painting the black burns to look like deep brown worn gouges
and consider them wear marks. The customer is ok with this but I'm not.
It deserves to look better. Any ideas?

Groop,
The tilt top table is completed and about 90% back to normal. The burns were
1/8 of an inch deep and had to be filled. I ended up painting the background
with a stipple technique and filling with an amber/pale clear lacquer stick.

I'm am satisfied with the results and I am confident the customer will be
pleased as well as the husband who burned it.  Thanks for the advice
I have tucked  away the various approaches for the next adventure.
