I'm about to start on a pair of exterior doors for our
Statehouse here, and if it goes as I expect, I will get a
chance to bid on this project in the next couple of years.
Have a look, and keep in mind this entrance is bigger than
the picture indicates. Overall, I'd say this entrance is about
20'wide and 20' high. I would love to get it, but this will be
a serious challenge.

I too, would like to use the best exterior topcoat available,
and have been wondering if I should consider something
other than Epifanes. However in this case the ability to
recoat and allow for relatively easy removal would rank
high on my list of consideration. I wouldn't want to put
something on that would have to be sanded off when
replacement becomes necessary.

The wood is quartersawn oak. These pictures show just how
far gone these doors are. Of course I'll be using epoxy to
saturate the core and reattach the skin of this door. I also will
use epoxy to reattach all the trim that is face nailed on the
exterior side.  I think sealing the outside surface with epoxy is
a choice of basic survival and will extend the life of the
varnish topcoat. The varnish can be recoated and removed
when necessary.  I will be telling them they need to implement
a regular program of maintenance to stay on top of it.
