Good day groop,
This chair came to me recently needing much of the binding
replaced and tightened. The chair has a Heywood Bros. label
under the seat, placing it before the Wakefield merger.
I've done a modest amount of wicker and cane repairs over the
past 30 years but this chair is a bit more special than most pieces
I've seen. I'm fully aware that cane is very hard to get a decent
finish on and I want to do the best possible with this chair.
It appears that some of the binding is slightly darker than other,
mostly on the upright portions of the back. I don't know if it
possibly was dyed a different color, or maybe different strands
simply aged this way.
I would like suggestions on how to get the rich caramel color
into the new binding short of waiting 120 years. Should I wrap it
first and then color it? Is there a way to darken it before I wrap
it?
I'm also curious as to opinions to what the chair is worth. The
owner didn't figure it was worth more that $100. For the most
part, the frame is in good condition. There is evidence of a repair
to the right arm and the seat has been replaced in the past. It's
oozing with white glue...
Sincere thanks,
