This couch was seen by Groop before I met Groop. A poorly exposed photo of
this was used in my "Professional Refinishing" article from May '99.
Without going to the archives again, somebody commented it "looked like a
gallon of Maalox." Well, it kinda was, actually...(there were some serious
flaws in the editing of this article; another Maalox moment)
The couch had been stored in a garage with a leaking roof for many years.
Rot was at the edge of permanent damage but all of the frame was salvaged.
Springing and all other aspects of the restoration were very extensive. I'm
thinking I did this in 1986... I forget now.
The original upholstery was a burgundy leather. (color was preserved in the
folds of the tufting), however the new cover was done in a high-end
Naugahyde of customer's choice.
The entire piece is stuffed with a curled hair mix. Each diamond takes
around 15-20 minutes to sculpt, and the "sepentined-band" took days to
stuff. All told, it seems I put in over 125 hours on this project. (Don, it
used to be wobbly, but not anymore)
I hope to have some "before/after" pics in the coming months of the fainting
couch similar to this with mahogany lion's head carving which I shared with
you a few months ago...
Later, Buck
