Dear members,
I received a request from a valued client who is trying to
settle a moving damage claim. The shipper balked at a
refinishing estimate saying he wanted it replaced because the
finish was applied in China c1860. The shipper has a replacement
cost statement from an antique dealer in NYC.
It looks an ordinary brushed on lacquer finish with glaze to me
but I am not expert on antiquity or chemistry. I am hoping I can
obtain some expert opinions that I can pass along to defend the
decision to either refinish or cash settle based on refinishing
cost.
