I was sent to inspect this marble table top for an insurance claim.
The home owner belives the event was the result of water getting
into the slab from the back side. The table is over 25 years old,
the pop chip is right where the head of the table place would be set.
Under the slab is a sheet of 3/8" plywood, extending to within 3"of the edge,
and covering the location of the pop damage. The ply is epoxied to the back
and no evidence of water or raised grain is visible.
Also it should be known that the damage didn't show up for over 12 months
and the house was freezing cold when the pipe in the lower room broke.
No water came in direct contact with the top, however two chairs
in the same area do show signs of de-lamination,
possibly due to cold or too much damp air.
Any opinions?
