I want to thank GROOP members for posting info and pictures.
This information allowed me the opportunity to play a bit
and get this look I was trying to match for a customer.

This is all 2x4 pine dimensioned down and glue and dowel joinery.
Frames were stop dado and dado for 1/4" knotty pine
veneer plywood free floating panels (snug fit).
I precut and dowelled everything and prefinished it all before assembly.

FINISH SCHEDULE:

1) Sanded to 220

2) conditioned all surfaces with xylene wash.

3) Without waiting for it to dry I mixed 16 oz xylene and
2 oz MLC Woodsong II chestnut. and ragged it on
including just bunching the rag and blotching it here and there.

4) Used zinsser seal coat and sealed it all a light coat
and let dry in the sun 15 minutes.

5) Light sand and one more seal coat for another 15 minutes.

6) Took black edging stick and edged all the edges, added a few
marks here and there and light swiped across various areas of
the high parts of grain and around knots. Burnished some marks
to fade in, washed some off with xylene stain mix left over if the
marks didn't look right for me.

7) Took dead flat lacquer (old mohawk spray cans I still have
around) and top coated it all two coats with a half hour and
light sand with 320 in between coats.

8) Assembled it all with glue and dowels only except inside bottom
I framed with a brad gun, some one by and 3/4" plywood.
Planed and sanded a couple areas that didn't quite go together right and
used some xylene mix and edge crayon to blend it in then top coated.

9) Upholstered top with 2" foam and put it on with a 4' piano hinge.

Took about 5 hours to do all the finish work on the pieces
and another 2 hours afterward for my repairs.
Precut and dry fit parts was about a half day
and final assembly was about a half day.
So there's about 2 full days worth in both pieces.
They are 5' long and about 17"h x 18" d per customer choice.

I figure GROOP saved me at LEAST a day trying
to figure ways to come up with the finish and look.
THANKS AGAIN!

Thanks GROOP!
