This is my cowtail "tool" I made. I used jute spring tying twine,
looped it several times about six inches long, left a long trail end
at the top and then wrapped it from the middle to the top like a
hangman's noose. Then I cut the loops.
I use MLC windsong stains or a glaze thinned. Dip the "tool" in,
lay it on a rag and dab off most of the stain, tap it once or twice
on the rag to see how much fluid comes off, then use light swipes,
strokes, slaps, and dabs on a sealed finish. If I don't like the look
of a particular mark I wipe it off up to an hour later with mineral
spirits if I need to. Then I seal again and begin top coat layers.
This particular finish is MLC golden oak on oak veneer, zinsser
sealcoat shellac (2 coats), toner coat (had to use some green
and brown to shade various areas for an even tone), Seal coat
again 2 coats, no sanding in between and no wait time either.
Mist coat then go right over again with thin coat. Let dry 2 hours.
Then used MLC windsong Cherry for cowtail and also on wire
gun cleaning brush for flyspecks. Zinsser sealcoat again,
then duravar satin topcoat, two coats.
