Don't know if info this will help.
I had a fire damage job to do, metal plate was rusted
and copper plating and patina were missing in some areas.
I cleaned with various chemicals and scoured with steel wool.
This brought the original metal clear and clean in the areas
the finish was completely gone.  Then I applied a copper plate solution
let sit, rinsed with water, let dry, reapplied a couple times in this manner.

Then I used an aging chemical and applied once overall, rinsed and
let dry.  Then reapplied in a couple areas it needed.  I then had to reapply
the copper solution in a few small areas. Rinsed with water and let dry.

Attached are the before and after pics of an aged antique copper
plate/dish/pot or whatever this thing is called.  The chemicals
only work on metal AND have copper in them so it's really copper
plating going on without the muss and fuss.  Not a real heavy plate
mind you.  But it looks fine.  This client was in love with it.  You can't
skip the stripping stage though, you have to get to the bare metal.

The chemicals were:
Copper plating solution
Green Patina

Both from
Jax Chemical Company
78-11 267th Street
Floral Park, NY 11004

I found them online and ordered from their site.  Fast
communications and prompt ship, decent price.  Web search should
turn them up for you easy enough.  Don't recall their URL.
They offer quite a few metal finishing solutions.  I bought a pint
of their entire line to keep in stock.  Their brass cleaner is
SUPERB!

The picture of the plate alone is the before pic.  The metal in
the table was also processed in the same manner.  You can tell the
rust has been replaced with the deeper copper color in the plate section.
