Hello Groop,
I need to repair this pedestal from a 25 year old Drexel
Heritage dining table which has cracked and the owner tried to
repair with screws, staples, gorilla glue, caulk, liquid cement
and anything else he could find at Home Depot. I have a few
questions:
1 - Repairing the crack: Since the owner dripped various
adhesives into the crack I don't have clean mating surfaces to
perform a good repair. I'm thinking of drilling 2 - 1/4" holes
down the crack to eliminate some of the bad surface so I can get
the two halves to come together under clamping pressure. I will
then run liquid hide glue into the crack and clamp overnite
followed by redirilling the 1/4" holes and inserting dowels with
titebond. I'm also contemplating a dowel through the side of the
pedastal perpendicular to the crack to reinforce the repair. Any
thoughts or problems with this?
2 - All the tails and sockets have been damaged so I will be
shimming each tail to return to a tight fit. When finished
should the tails be glued into the sockets and at the top of the
leg or are they designed to work without any adhesive?
3 - What would you have charged to do this cleanup and repair?
Thank you for your time and wisdom,
