Is there any hope of removing a metalic paint from a guilded frame?
I have been successful with using methylene chloride to remove that layer
of gold paint. Careful timing can selectively remove the brass paint and even
leave much of the oil gilt area intact. I feel that the strongest solvent for the
paint layer will keep me from having to rub the thin and fragile gilt layer
too much. I use a sable brush or cotton swabs and keep the wiping to a
minimum.
