We recently completed restoring a mid twentieth century cedar chest. Nothing
unusual about that, done dozens. This was your basic cedar chest with no
insert, no veneer, no fancy handles, just plain cedar lumber glued up into
four sides, a top, and a bottom.
Just before we completed the project, the owner brought me a copy of a
newspaper article about the craftsman that built the chest. Seems he was a
local man that became fairly well known in the area as a builder of cedar
chests.
Interestingly enough, the author of the article is also a customer of ours
and the nephew of the maker.
So far you are wondering what the big deal is, right? The maker of the
cedar chest was BLIND!!! Now, I have a healthy fear of the table saw, but I
can't imagine pushing a board through the blade with my eyes closed, can
you?
I have attached the article. It somehow makes my woodworking skills seem
inferior.
