This wicker and cane rocker came to us painted white and
very damaged. It was a fun project that I thought I would share.
After stripping the paint and removing the damaged and broken cane,
we completed the following repairs; replaced the rockers, wrapped the
legs with new cane, rebuilt the left arm completely, rebuilt the zig-zag
patterned top piece directly above the back panel, recaned the seat
(machine woven open weave pattern as original), wrapped the right arm,
recaned the back inset panel in the Star of David pattern (as original).
Then it was stained a light oak and finished with a satin lacquer.
Overall I am very pleased with the outcome.
I am guessing that it is a Heywood Brothers rocker, unfortunately
the label is long gone. Paper label originally and it probably was
gone before it was painted. If not the paint and stripper got it.
We could see no evidence of it being there when we got it.
The good news --
It was fun to do and turned out lovely.
It absolutely had to be finished by 7/31/01
according to the customer.
We made the deadline.
The bad news --
It is still sitting in my shop, I have had two promises
of pick up dates, one promise of check in the mail,
and now she will not return my phone calls.
The maybe good news --
Her father called and admitted that she could not afford
to pick it up and promised to show up next Wednesday.
The better than maybe good news --
I have another customer that wants it,
so hurry up Daddy!
