LOL's done it again! In conversation with him I
lamented the fact that I have never had a proper
mallet. "OH! I'll make you one" was his quick reply.
I was rather surprised at that, but he reassured me
yes, he'll turn one out. I happened to have some old
Koa from the fence posts of the Parker ranch on
the big island of Hawaii---must be at least a
hundred years old. I had been carrying them from
Hawaii to Everett, Wa. to Louisburg "Some day
I'll". That someday suddenly presented itself. End
result, a bee-yoo-tiful work of art, er, LOL, with his
personal feature of a cupped end for tapping the
chisels for light work.
Now the conundrum; I don't want to ding it. They
say that the first dent on a new car is the hardest. I'll
just have to do it.
I found a wagon wheel hub with one spoke. I cut
the spoke down for the handle, sawed one turning
off, and it worked quite well. It had character, but
no class, next to the piece d'resistance. The photo
does not do it justice. The chatonay thing is absolutely
alive. The drawer is what needed the
pulls.
