I have a table that a client wants me to bring back to
life. It was her grandfather's which was last used as a
work bench. We are going to leave a lot of the nicks,
cuts etc in but just make the appearance good enough
to put in her house.

My question is the piece at the bottom of the pedestal.
The squared off ends look like they have been altered
or cut. Does anyone have an idea what the bottom
might have looked like when it was new?

I think it had legs/feet similar to the ones in the picture.

The base would have had a scroll at the bottom of each
similar to the one pictured.  But it would have been
more like a scroll and a rosette on each side of scroll.
The picture is rough proximity only I couldn't find what
I wanted.  That is one style.

Another has them up on bun feet plain or ornate as in
the other picture.

Earl,

The most common type of foot (95%) on these
tables was the empire style scroll foot, veneered with
quartersawn oak just as the rest of the table.  The
other footing was usually a bear or tiger claw.

The entire foot was probably no more that 4"x4"x6"
deep so that half of the scroll stuck out from under the
platform.

The picture I have attached shows a close style and
curve of the foot but NOT the placement that would be
appropriate on your table.
