The photo shows a typical pair of Period reproduction footboard posts
(stetcher not shown) brought in for the common repair of busted out wood.
Rather than glue the spintered wood, we chose to "let in" some new wood.
You can't tell from the photo, but it is Rubber Tree Wood. This specie wood
(from Malaysia) is rather soft and has little strength in stress area's.
Manufacturers don't care, and customer's don't know.
The replacement wood incidently, is Beech. Normally we'd use Hard Maple,
but we had just the right size in Beech, so we used it ...
The repair is stronger than the original.
The finish is virtully painted.
The holes contain Threaded inserts.
The wood was saw kerfed to remove the damaged area
and the Beech glued with a PVA.
