We just completed making 6 new flat cut Mahogany veneer over
plywood back splats for 1 customer, and 1 ParaPly back splat
plus a repair to the back rail where it busted out for another.
From veneering the plywood to pierce cutting and sanding due to scroll
saw wobbles, including one splat installed took, 11 hours.
The 7th for the other customer was very difficult to make, fit and
install. Much thicker wood and it had to fit into mortises at top and
bottom with the ears being exactly the right height. This meant the
angles on the two tenon's and the total height of the back splat had
to be "right on" with no margin for error when the crest rail is glued
to the rear leg posts.
You can see that it was achieved. And achieved much better than
when originally made, as when one end of the crest rail was sawn off,
it jumped upwards.
This meant that the maker forced the crest rail into place by bending
the rail and gluing the wood in place placing undue strain on the back
splat probably throwing it into a curve. I'm sure the curve helped to
quicken it's demise. The "seventh" splat took 7 hours to make and
install along with a small repair.
