Here's a quick pic of a recent project I worked on.
It is one of the first that I have restored without stripping.
The item came into the shop, with the finish in good shape,
just very dirty and looked like some smoke damage on the
top half. The veneer on top had been removed so I replaced it
with some new two ply mahogany.
The doors were "crusty" with dirt and
none of the beautiful mahogany could be seen.
I scrubbed it with mineral spirits, wet sanded with 320 grit and
mineral spirits, sprayed a coat of Zinsser seal coat, followed by
two coats of Asphaltum sandwiched between gloss lacquer.
Then top coated with four coats of gloss, wet sanded to 800 grit
and top coated with one coat of Satin Lacquer.
The asphaltum really accented the look of the doors
and really made this quite an attractive piece.
The old fella who found this in the dumpster nearly fell over
when he picked it up. I charged him $525.00.
