Groop,
This is a clock that recently came into my shop.
I have several questions concerning this beast
and how to approach it.
First, let me say the clock was missing the top Bezel
(I believe that is the proper term for it?) The round wooden
molding that holds the crystal and the clock face --
anyway, one email to Frank Laroque (and a pint of my
famous sweet pickles and sweet pepper relish)
and behold a new bezel, made exactly like the old.
Fantastic.
Now concerning the clock, I will be using Hal Resnikoff method
for veneer patch on the bottom half (thanks to Gary Barret and
Kevin Hancock for the generous pieces of Rosewood Veneer).
and will be cleaning the rest of the clock and padding on some
shellac as a finish.
Notice that on the calender clock face,
some of the black numerals are worn out.
Is it proper to "paint" that in,
and what method should be used?
What materials?
For you clock restorationists, how far would you go on this clock
(I realize it is not a priceless treasure, but....)
How far would you in cleaning it? (strip? Love potion #9, Naptha?)
What would you finish it with? Shellac? lacquer? varnish? Wax?
Thanks for your Time!
