Before you do anything try out some neutral Howard RestorAFinish on it.
I've had really good luck with it on similar problems before (before and
after pic attached - sun bleached and heat steamed finish). Non-invasive
and good first try before stripping. I'm not leaning toward your's being a
conversion varnish. Don't just wipe it on and off, dab it on and let it dig in
a little.
