I am familiar with the traditional carvers mallet, though I don't know the
origin. Here is a photo of the traditional carvers mallet which I use. It is
made from Persimmon wood. What I like about it is the balance. It seems to
be just right and gives a solid "thunk" when struck. Or maybe I'm just used
to it. I use for all manner of chiseling wood.
