All of us from time to time work on furniture that has missing or
broken parts. Some of these parts are available, some are not. Some
require people like Virgil who can professionally make a custom part.
However, some parts...with a little bit of ingenuity and some simple
tools can be made in your own shop with remarkably good results.
 
Viz this little knife hinge. It was too much trouble to look through
various cataloging to find an exact duplicate, if there was one. Much
easier, and less time consuming to make one. Sure it took some time
- less than an hour.  I think it's darn good. The flat bar is from some
scrap I keep around, and the Pin is a Nail with a small Washer. We
purposely made ours slightly longer to better fit the mortice.
