Groop,
Photo 1 is an overall view of Mahogany bed we've enlarged from full
size to king size. The posts are hand carved. The Railing is 3" wide and
3 3/4" high, made from Pine. The old headboard is standing at the rear
corner. The upper piece of the headboard which was originally joined
was sawed off and attached to the new wider piece. We still have to
make a center spindle, center mattress board and then do some
finishing work not to include the posts. Our plan is to turn a center leg
and attach to footboard, a plain leg on the center headboard and then
attach a center board between the two, having two simple legs to the
floor for mattress support. Instead of using 16/4 for the large blocking,
we used 3, 6/4 and changed the grain orientation on each to provide
better strength than a single 16/4.
This was a very mind taxing project which had to be well thought out in
advance for design, measurement and strength. We were less than 1/8"
off in measurement, but we are getting old and can't see the ruler to
well any longer.
Photo's 2 and 3 are simply a closeup of the construction detail. All the
pieces are mortised and tenoned. It looks rather blocky to us but we
couldn't figure out another design which went with the posts, would be
strong and to fit what we had to work with. Hopefully some of the
blocky look will disappear when the finishing is completed.
