Don MacKinnon writes:

Here are some photos of a desk a client brought parts of to me in
an effort to learn more about what it is.  The desk was too large
for him to bring to the shop in its entirety. The picture of the whole
desk is one he took.

The dovetails all appear to be hand-cut with the original scribe
lines still visible in the wood.  The drawer bottoms all appear to
be hand chamfered.  The wood is beautiful, what I would call tiger
maple.

One of his questions was whether the piece had ever been
refinished.  The finish has a high gloss and is in very good shape.
There are some minor visible runs in the topcoat.  The one photo
of the carving appears to show some dirt under the finish next to
the raised portions, leading me to suspect refinishing, but that was
the only sign I saw.  I couldn't tell him much else about the piece,
so I'm coming to the well for any and all thoughts on the origin
and condition of the piece.
