Groop. I would like to thank all the members for their
help and knowledge. I would like to share my
procedure for filling grain in all open pore woods.

First rule we have is nothing leaves the shop complete
unless it is exactly like the original color and grain
pattern that the manufacture used. We found that this
meet very ones expectations. The second rule is that
the grain must be filled on all horizontal surfaces. The
third rule is never use shellac.

I have been restoring furniture since 1976. This gave
me a lot of time to develop a system as new products
emerged on the market. For those old-timers Deft was
the craze back when I started.

To make a long story short I included pictures of two
pieces I restored this week. The grain pattern on the
mahogany piece pops. Flickers with the slightest
movement around the piece. The pictures of the oak
table I would like you to notice that the grain is about
twice the size as the grain pores itself. This is all done
during the filling process. Both pieces will age
beautifully as the new finish reaches 100 years old.

PreCat Lacquer is extremely durable and versatile.
Don't be afraid to use it in ways other than directed by
the manufacture. Which brings me to the point of
shellac usage. As far as I'm concerned shellac is not
compatible with pre cat lacquers. Certain to cause
finish failure down the road.

Instead of boring the uninterested in the details of my
approach to filling grain I would like to invite those
interested to ask the moderator to forward my email
address to you. Send an email with your phone
number and I will be glad to call you back and explain
my procedure. Or click the link to my web site located
on the members page under David Steigerwalt and fill
in the contact form. I will get back to you.

The Groop is a valued asset to all members. I wish that
more members would share their knowledge and
experiences. Furniture restoration is a gift that only a
few can do and it is an honorable profession.
