I shop at Goodwill for old wallpaper for the interior, then often
use parts of newer paper for the striping.  The exterior of metal
trunks are usually wire brushed with a high speed drill. I am
currently in the process of restoring the exterior of an 1890's
Louis Viton steamer trunk.  Some unknowing individual painted
this high priced luggage white!
The plan is to take the Louis Viton monogram fabric from the
unpainted underside, then fit it in between the battens on the top,
then purchase 2 yards of replacement fabric and gently age it
and fit the four sides.  The leather bindings clean up but this
trunk has been well traveled and shows signs of it.

In Progress:

Currently the concentration is on a really hard travelled Louis
Viton.  If you recall, it was painted white. Now many hours
later it is about ready for some newly aged classic LV canvas.

Look pretty darn good If I dont say so.  The Louis Vuitton
trunk turned out nice. Customer was really pleased.
