Hi, I'm Brian Franzen, one of Mitch's current students at the NIWF.
I was recently sent the following question from a relative in Southern
California. My first thought is that these doors were meant for interior use
and the problem will keep recurring. Having very little experience with this
problem I thought I would get some thoughts and suggestions about this
problem from any of you that have dealt with this type of situation.
"My neighbor has a nine year old house with "special" doors. These doors are
double paned 8 ft doors or so with veneered wood. The veneer has
risen/separated from the door where the south sun hits it. The doors started
off very smooth and are now very textured, and in places, has separated from
the wood and cracked. I've enclosed a few pictures to show you what I mean.
The homeowner has contacted a few carpenters who have come out to look at
the doors and all have said they can fix it. They never call back with an
estimate.
I thought you might be able to tell me more about veneer--can it be taken
off (easily)? Can new veneer be purchased/installed? How pricey would all
that be? What kind of wood worker does it take to do that type of thing? Is
it stupid to put veneer back on the outside of doors, especially those that
face the south."
