I thought I'd share this with groop. I really wanted to make
the quilt pop in this newest guitar and had read multiple tips
on making grain pop with linseed oil. I tried it on several
samples and liked what I saw but worried about it yellowing
over time. Once I get the color there I'd like to keep it that
way for as long as possible.
After an interesting conversation with our pal Russ he told me I'd
get the same results using super blond shellac as it is the color of
the linseed oil and not the penetration that gives you these results.
Well I trust him completely and without doing more samples
I went ahead with the guitar.
The dye of choice was Arti water soluble powders from
Highland Hardware made to their instructions. It was first
dyed yellow and then I applied a diluted purple made from
equal parts of their Red and Blue. Once dyed I sealed with
2 light coats of Russ's super blond shellac at a 2lb. cut.
This is the cap after sealing before level sanding. I'll send
out another pic or two once it is all done with strings on.
Thanks to Russ, and thanks to Mitch at DCTC for introducing
me to ARTI dyes and making me a finish addict/geek!

I'm pretty happy with the results. The next one will be a notch above it.
One picture after buffing but before assembly with one type of lighting, the
other in my home with just a lamp on in the room and my flash from the
camera so there's a color difference. The picture before assembly is a more
accurate representation of the color.
Hope you like.
