Alan Noel writes;
Last Saturday, I had the pleasure of teaching a class on simple
decorative finishing techniques, gilding and gold leafing at Highland Hardware.
When I arrived in the morning for the class
one of the students was none other than our own Fred McLean!
So, in my usual fashion of making everyone feel at ease and completely
taking advantage of the situation, I promptly put Fred on the spot as the
"other expert" in the class and began immediately deferring to Fred
for the answers to all of the classes questions.
It is my pleasure to report that Fred came through with flying colors.
Between the two of us we covered everything
from oil finishes to gold leafing and gilding.
Speaking of leafing, here's Fred's very first attempt :

He did a great job or, am I really that good of a teacher?
Fred leafed and touched up the frame.
I glazed it with a mixture of asphalt and van dyke brown
to kill a little of the brassiness and to age it a little.
Fred was a big help to me in the class
and he even bought my lunch. What a guy!!
Thanks again Fred for lunch and for making my day a lot brighter.
I gave the frame with this painting of our favorite city
to my lovely wife for her birthday this week.
Perfect :-)
