I'm not quite sure on the best way of fixing the splits in the lower
panel of an Mahogany exterior door. Here are the details I've
gathered from the manufactures rep and some details from the
contractor. The rep claims the door was manufactured in Texas and
shipped to Michigan during the winter. The contractor states that the
door was shipped in a wood crate and was installed on the house
within two days after arriving in Michigan. Of course the contractor
believes the problem is caused from glue in the dado and the rep
believes the problem may be a climatic one. I did ask the rep if glue
could have possibly been used in the dado and he assured me that
there was no glue inserted into the dado for the panel. I believe the
cause could be one or the other and possibly both. Also, during my
inspection I didn't see any nails misplaced in the molding that may
have hit the panel.
My question is; What is the best method for fixing the splits (3
total)? One is quite large and may accept a veneer to fill the void.
The other two are small and didn't quite show up in the photos. I
don't have alot of experience with exterior doors and I am concerned
about the longevity of the repair. The door faces S/E and is in direct
sunlight most of the day.
Photo 1 is the exterior and photo 2 is the interior.
