I just read this in a Piano Technicians Journal.

For face pads on glue blocks, glue a used computer mouse pad.
Flexable, yet firm!

When I glue up veneer on the fronts of grand pianos, I have
a curved glueblock to conform to the shape of the piano.
I have always used train-board cork (about 1/4" thick) on
the face of this glueblock and it has worked well.
The mouse pads idea sounds like a great alternative.

Here is a picture of the glueblock using cork
on its face on the front of the piano.
