A lot of marble comes from Carrara, Italy.
A large mountain with many marble quarries
is situated just to the Northeast edge of Carrara.
The quarries are open to the public
and there is a free outdoor marble museum.
The photo shows the open quarry structure.
You see two pieces of heavy equipment on the lower left side for scale.
One appears to be a digger and the other a bull dozer sized fork lift.

Also, I paid a cold call to the lab of one Pippi Leonardo.
Pippi was nice enough to put up with our attempts at the
Italian language and gave us a brief description of his techniques.
The photo is a snapshot of us in his lab.
His methods are simple and old.
Stripping is done by wet sanding and
finishing with pumice and French polish.
