RE: Wheelchair in the shop

Dennis,

I think Frank's article in Professional Refinishing may offer some ideas.
That plus some creativity on your part ought to get it done.

Personally, I think wheelchairs leave a lot to be desired. Like a good
propulsion system capable of freeway speeds, roll bar, air bag, and dual
caliper brakes. That's what needs improvement.

To Ozzie and Dennis.

I too have a dear friend who is an amazing wood worker and master chair
caner (rush too) and happens to be totally blind. He is also 79 years old,
and won't even let me help him rip up sheet goods. I drive the truck.

I do help with many repairs and I do have to remind him to turn the light on.
I have learned a lot about a lot from him, and I am sure that a determined
person can overcome what seems to be insurmountable odds, if they stick
with it.

Dennis, I am sure you will be able to work, and I am sure you can do some
modifications in you shop for a wheelchair, but I think the two most important
things you need are the patience to accept that things will take 3 or 4 times
longer than they used to, and the humility to ask for help when you really
need it. Many times people eager to help are intimidated by disability, and
the best way to handle it, is to simply say: "I need you to do this .... and
I can handle the rest"

We have a wonderful Industries for the Handicapped Center here in Albany,
and I would recommend that you contact a similar organization in your area.
You may find not only ideas, but perhaps people willing to come and help.
That what happened with me and the blind guy. And I would strongly
encourage everyone reading this to adopt a "blind guy" - a person who
shares our interests, and for whatever reason needs a little help.

Best of luck, Dennis.

MikeM
