Removing Red Mahogany Stain

Jeff Johnson writes:

Howdy all, hope everyone is off to a great start in 2000.

I am refinishing a mahogany conference table and credenza that had a dark
red mahogany stain and finish on them. My customer wants them to come
as close as possible to the color of natural cherry (the trim in the new board
room). I explained to them all of the obvious difficulties in trying to make red
mahogany look like light cherry but they still wanted it attempted.

I have stripped off all of the finish and tried to remove the dye from the wood
with a very concentrated Chlorine bleach (68%+). This had very little effect
on the stain and the wood still has a lot of the red dye in it. Does anyone
have any good suggestion for how I might further decrease the "red" in the
wood and come closer to the cherry color. Even after bleaching it TWICE
the wood is still significantly darker than what I am trying to achive.

I realize it will not be possible to get an exact match,
but I do need to come closer than I currently am.

Thanks!
