RE:Caning

Brian,
All of us who have ever done caning know that it can be a fast buck or
a loss of money. I did some pressed chairs that were easy to prep.
Original cane that hardly took a nudge of my chisel to come out. Two
minutes to clean the groove. And then there are the ones that require
nothing short of a jackhammer to get clean. Either way, once the groove
is clean, I too can knock out six in an hour.
As for the hand weave, probably the easiest seat is the bell type with
large holes spaced 3/4" apart. When my wife was caning, she could
do one in about three hours. But this included the tedious removal of
the little hairs with an exacto knife and a pair of small scissors. The
carriage type cane would take days.
I do not doubt your abilities or anyone else's to get a job done. We are
all good at one thing or another. I believe your original post was to let
us know that caning can be a way to generate more income. It is.
The chair that a customer wants caned may also need some other
type of work; gluing, repaired, refinished, etc.
Anyway, your original post did raise a few eyebrows along with the
b.s. flag. I don't think anyone here was calling you a bragger or fibber.
Keep up the good work.

>>Six chairs an hour???!
Brian..please accept an apology...the tone of my response may not have been
clear....I was WOWING....not BS'ing...I have done much caning in my earlier
years, and for a time, was pretty good at it....but could never aproach that kind
of output.. (it should be noted that I have only 4 1/2 fingers on my left paw..),
if you did want to relocate to the N east I could make you a rich man, however ;-).
I noticed right off the bat that Groop members can be a little testy. Please try
not to be offended too easily, we're all good hearted here, and we're also all
good at what we do, but no doubt most of us have that Virgoan gene (nuff said?)
Please accept regards and wishes for a happy and safe.....
and of course prosperous, New Year!!!
