I have experienced these problems also and found if I soak the slats 
(hot water for about 2 hours)  and place them in a jig to hold straight 
till dry works very well.  Just make sure you let the slats dry, I leave 
them in the jig for about 4 - 7 days.   When dry just glue on a good 
quality heavy weight canvas cloth (get mine from Van Dykes).  
Make sure you use a flexible glue in the process.  
The white/yellow common wood glue will work but due to flex of the 
tambour will cause premature failure as the tambour is flexed.  
I get my glue also from Van Dykes -- I am sure many other sources 
are available.  Hope this helps.
